Supervisor Bill Gates’ Smart Government Helped Maricopa County Handle the Pandemic and Saved Taxpayers’ Money

Efficient, smart, and effective government is what Supervisor Gates has achieved during his first term on the Board of Supervisors. In the 21st century, county residents expect their government to meet the needs of a new era of technology without raising taxes and overspending on pipe dreams. Supervisor Gates has done just that.

Under Gates’ leadership, Maricopa County created the Innovation Studio, which is a department built to help find efficiencies in government. For every dollar invested in the Innovation Studio, taxpayers save $9.88, which has equaled $7.98 million saved in costs since 2018. This includes projects that helped the Sheriff’s Office, county courts, and permitting departments create better processes leading to efficiencies and savings.

In his first term, Supervisor Gates pushed to take Maricopa County digital with his smart government initiatives. Bringing county government into the digital age has made it easier, cheaper and quicker for residents to do business. Permitting departments can now serve customers fully online and residents can live stream public hearings and meetings to interact digitally with their government. These initiatives prepared Maricopa County to operate in a remote digital world during COVID-19. All without raising taxes.

During his year as Chairman, Supervisor Gates led Maricopa County through multiple high profile and challenging issues, including appointing a new County Attorney, renegotiating elections responsibilities with the Recorder, and suspending the County Assessor for neglect of duty. Under his leadership, county government was effective in handling these issues. For example, during the County Attorney appointment, the Board appointed a citizens council to vet applicants and provide initial recommendations for appointment, ensuring a diverse set of voices had input into the selection.
Supervisor Gates has delivered for the residents of Maricopa County District 3. The tax rate remains flat, but the efficiency and innovation in county government continues to grow.
