Arizona 51 and Loop 101 in Phoenix designated as scenic corridors

Move aimed at keeping billboards, salvage yards out but does not carry force of law

Arizona 51 and Loop 101 in north Phoenix have been designated as scenic corridors, the first freeways on the city’s list of scenic roads.

The Phoenix City Council approved the corridors and policies associated with them at its meeting Wednesday…

…The corridors will extend 300 feet to either side of Arizona 51 north of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve and Loop 101 between the city limits of Glendale and Scottsdale.

The designations could discourage the placement of billboards and salvage yards, among other uses. The changes state that, as a matter of city policy, rezonings or zoning variances that would allow such uses should be discouraged…

…The effort began when Councilman Bill Gates asked for ideas that would clarify city law that prohibits billboards on all freeways, except Interstate 17 and Interstate 10 east of the junction with I-17 near Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.
